Onlookers cheered when the top stone, known as the capstone, was lifted back into place at the very top of Wellington Monument last week.

The stone (pictured) was lowered into place by crane on a wet and wind day, and guided into position by the National trust architect and four stonemasons.

The date last Wednesday – October 21 – was the 203rd anniversary of the laying of the first stone of the monument.

National Trust community fundraiser and engagement officer Emma Jones said: “I admit I had a little tear of emotion. As someone said, it is a moment in history, one of those precious moments we are lucky to be part of.”
