Churches and community volunteers provided a festive meal for people who would otherwise be alone on Christmas Day at the United Reformed Church in Mantle Street, Wellington.

Twenty-seven volunteers gave up time on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day to prepare the room and food for more than 20 guests.

There was a real buzz of conversation as diners enjoyed a three-course traditional meal, at times accompanied by carols on the piano.

One guest, who was having his first Christmas without his wife, said the event, being held for the fourth consecutive year, was a ‘revelation’. He said last year had been challenging but this year, to be in good company and have a great meal served, had made a world of difference.

The event was run by Churches Together Wellington and headed up by Richard Appleby on its behalf.

Mr Appleby said: “Our thanks must go out to all those who volunteered their time and a special mention to our chef Anne Sparkes who stepped in at a late stage to ensure the event ran. We must also thank the local businesses and suppliers who support us year on year.”
