THE NATWEST bank in Fore Street, Wellington, shut for good at close of business on Monday – and workmen quickly moved in to board up the letter box and cash machine.

The bank announced the closure in March just months after the HSBC bank a few doors down closed.

NatWest said it had taken the ‘difficult decision’ as transactions at the branch had fallen 35 per cent since 2011. It said customers have embraced online banking, with 54.6 per cent using digital banking options.

The nearest branch for customers now is in Taunton.
