GUESTS at a luxury hotel near Langford Budville narrowly escaped as the property was consumed by fire, taking 12 crews to put out the blaze.

Bindon Country House, the 19th century Grade II listed hotel that sleeps 26 with a pool and sauna, was partially destroyed after the property caught fire at around 11pm on Saturday night (July 12).

Justin Williams, co-owner of the Amchara health and wellbeing retreat said he remains in shock.

He said: “It’s very shocking. We’re really relieved that everyone got out safely.”

Justin’s business and life partner was on duty on the Saturday night and “ignored all protocol”, Justin said, to help evacuate the roughly 10 guests from the building.

Justin added: “It was pretty hairy on the top floor.

“I think if she hadn’t [gone to help], people would’ve died up there.”

The Grade II listed 19th century manor house in Langford Budville is set within several acres of stunning gardens and woodland. It has its own pool, tennis court and spa.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Services have confirmed there were no causalities and that the cause of the fire is believed to be accidental.

According to Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Services, three fire engines were initially dispatched from Wellington and Taunton late on Saturday evening, followed by two further engines from Taunton and Bampton.

Water carriers were then dispatched from Bridgwater.

Other services, from Colyton, Tiverton, Ivybridge, Clyst St George, Dulverton, Street, Chard and Martock, joined to assist throughout the night.

By 3.54am on Sunday, July 13, Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Services reported that crews were making steady progress extinguishing the fire which had consumed a three-storey annex area of the holiday home.

By this time, part of the building had reportedly collapsed. Fire services also noted considerable smoke damage to the property.

The incident had mostly been resolved by 8.55am, with crews remaining on site later in the morning to monitor “hot spots”.
