AGE UK Somerset is looking for more people to attend its exercise classes already being held in Wellington.

The charity aims to offer a class that will suit people whether they are generally fit and active or if they sometimes feel unsteady on their feet.

Physical activity has a huge positive effect on health at any age but among older adults doing more can have a life-changing impact.

A wide variety of activities for older people, including general fitness classes and social events are offered, but more emphasis is being put on increasing the number of falls-prevention classes provided locally.

Every day in Somerset just under ten people over the age of 65 are admitted to hospital as a result of a fall.

Tai Chi is as effective as most high-impact exercises in improving circulation, co-ordination and decreasing blood pressure. As importantly for older people, it is extremely effective at improving physical balance, vitally important for helping to prevent falls in later life.

The charity has opened 12 new Tai Chi Qi Gong classes across Somerset in the last few weeks after receiving funding from the National Lottery Community Fund, as part of its ongoing plan to keep older adults fit and independent. It already runs a Qi Gong class at Lodge Close in Wellington. The charity also holds Stay Strong Stay Steady classes, evidence-based falls-prevention sessions, with proven results.

Classes are run with Somerset County Council and are accessed by referral only. They aim to improve strength and balance, giving increased confidence and a better chance of retaining independence. Classes are already running in Wellington.
