WELLINGTON Town Council decided at its December meeting to support residents who strongly objected on the grounds of noise to supermarket Waitrose’s proposals to have three late night and early morning deliveries to its store off High Street, Wellington.

The council agreed to recommend Taunton Deane Borough Council, which will make the final decision, to refuse the application to allow a maximum of three deliveries between 8pm and 7am.

About a dozen residents attended asking the council to oppose the plan. John Musgrove, of Orchard Court, which adjoins the store, said the delivery lorries made a lot of noise at least three times a day. “Surely they don’t need them at night. It is utterly out of order."

Another resident, Mrs Smith, said she had been disturbed by lorries as early as just after six o’clock in the morning.

Cllr Bob Bowrah said Waitrose was a

welcome asset to the town but he was not happy with the suggested change in the conditions which the store knew about before it opened. The changes would cause disturbance to neighbours and Waitrose should be able to organise deliveries within more sensible hours.

Cllr Gary James said that to deliver between 8pm and 7am was ‘totally unacceptable’.
