WELLINGTON Town Council decided to raise no objection to BT’s plans to remove four public telephone boxes in the town because of their very low usage – due to more and more people having mobile phones.

Nationally usage of public kiosks has dropped by 90 per cent in the past decade.

The kiosks to be axed are at Station Road (no calls in the past 12 months), Quantock Road (six), Tone Hill, Tonedale (seven) and Beech Hill (six).

Cllr Andrew Govier said that the figures of 19 calls in a year showed there was no real need for the kiosks. “We can’t justify keeping them with such a low number of calls,” he said.

BT is also proposing to remove kiosks from Chelston (one call), White Ball Hill (zero), Greenham (zero), Appley (zero), Plain Pond, Wiveliscombe (zero) and Langley Marsh (one).
