IT is feared that out-of-town dealers are coming into Wellington and using local youngsters to deliver their illegal drugs to addicts.
The latest police report presented to Wellington Town Council on Monday was almost scoffed at by councillors when it stated just four drug offences had been reported in August.
Cllr Lynda Russell-Cairns said: “Only four drug offences in Wellington? I have reported twice about dealers down at the Basins.
“These are out-of-town dealers who are using the kids of this town as runners. There is a big problem in this town.”
Cllr Marcus Barr had already suggested the police bring in sniffer dogs – the trained drug-busting animals – to see if they could help in the battle against drugs.
PCSO Steve Hill told councillors he could only go by the information logged on the police’s computer system for drug offences.
Only last month the police had appealed for people to act as their ’ears and eyes’ to help in the ongoing campaign against drugs.
Mayor Cllr Gary James made that appeal again on Monday and asked people to take notes about anything suspicious and to tell the police if they suspect illegal drug activities are taking place in their street or area.
Councillors have previously been told that undercover plain-clothed officers were working in the area to try and identify drug-related issues.
Anyone with information about people they believe to be dealing drugs should report their suspicions to the police at https://www.avonandsomerset.police.uk/contact-us/tell-us-something/ or on the non-emergency number 101.
