SCORES of people in Stawley and the surrounding area have signed a petition calling for urgent repairs to be made at The Globe Inn at Appley.

The petition, signed by 212 people, has been handed to Taunton Deane Borough Council (TDBC) and calls on it to use its legal powers in relation to listed buildings to ensure repairs are carried out.

The pub is reputed to be about 500 years old but part of it has been derelict for almost three years after the wall of a barn attached to the pub collapsed into the road.

The landlady, Jane Fuller, and Stawley Parish Council have been asking the freehold owner for repairs to be carried out but work has still not been completed.

The council says the derelict building is an eyesore which threatens the structural integrity of the pub. It also fears it could affect the pub’s long-term commercial viability as potential customers could be put off by its external appearance.

The parish council says The Globe is a popular pub that is valued by local people and since April last year has been listed on Taunton Deane’s Register of Community assets.

As the petition has been signed by more than 200 people, it is expected TDBC councillors will debate it at the next full council meeting on Tuesday, April 12.
