POLICE are continuing to investigate an ’incident’ following a fire at the old Toc-H building in North Street, Wellington, last week.

The ’incident’ is not being dealt with by the local constabulary but by officers of the patrol directorate based at Taunton Police Station.

The fire service called in the police after discovering a number of suspected cannabis plants in the building.

The police issued the following statement to the WWN this week: "We were called by Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service at 12.15am on Thursday, October 21, to make us aware of an incident they were dealing with in Wellington.

"Firefighters on the scene of a fire at a residential address in North Street told us that in a search of the property they had discovered a number of suspected cannabis plants. Enquiries into the suspected cannabis growth are ongoing and officers remain at the scene.

"The cause of the fire is not believed to be suspicious at this time. Anyone with information that could help our enquiries is asked to call 101 and give reference number 5221246417."

The building in North Street has been in a derelict state for some years, although scaffolding appeared around it earlier this year while some work began. But it has been slow progress with very little activity in recent weeks.
