MP Rebecca Pow is calling on local residents to lobby the Boundary Commission to include the name of Wellington in the new Parliamentary constituency.
Ms Pow has been pressing for the constituency to be named Taunton and Wellington when boundary changes take effect at the next General Election.
Under the proposed changes, the Taunton Deane seat will lose Milverton, Langford Budville, Wiveliscombe, Cotford St Luke, and surrounding areas to a new constituency of Tiverton and Minehead. It will leave Taunton and Wellington as the only two communities of size in Ms Pow’s new Parliamentary area.
The commission has launched its final consultation on the proposals and has asked for views to be submitted by December 5, before it submits final recommendations to Parliament next summer.
Ms Pow said: “I was pleased the Boundary Commission accepted representations to include Norton Fitzwarren and Staplegrove in the new constituency of ‘Taunton’.
“However, I was disappointed that ‘Wellington’ was not included in the new constituency name.
“Given the historical, economic, and cultural importance of Wellington, which is a key part of the new constituency, I made written representations and attended the public hearing in Bath to make the case for the name of the constituency to be ‘Taunton and Wellington’.
“I will be making further such representations to the commission to reiterate this call.
“To add weight to this proposal, I would urge as many people as possible from Wellington who would also like to see the name change to submit this suggestion to the commission by December 5.”
