TAUNTON Deane MP Rebecca Pow, who supports a new train station for Wellington, is seeking a meeting with Network Rail to inform it about strong interest in the project.

‘Extremely positive’ talks have been held about providing a metro rail service between Taunton and Exeter.

The scheme, which could cost £30 million, would involve re-opening Wellington and Cullompton stations, which were closed in 1964.

Commuters could travel between Taunton, Wellington, Cullompton, Tiverton and Exeter, preferably walking or cycling to their home station.

Ms Pow said: “I am very pleased that the latest assessment carried out to inform the partnership group established for the Wellington and Cullompton station initiative has confirmed that, subject to topographical, structural and ground investigation surveys, new stations can in principle be accommodated in both locations.

“This is really welcome news. Since being MP I have been pushing this idea locally and in Westminster where I have met Transport  Ministers  to highlight the benefits of  establishing a metro-style station in Wellington. In particular I fed in data gathered from the large public meeting I held which signalled enormous support for a potential station.

“A station in Wellington would reduce traffic and would enable people from the Wellington area to get to Taunton and Bridgwater more easily and to reach London more quickly, as well, of course, as other destinations in the South-West and the North, all opening up  new opportunities.

“I shall be informing the Rail Minister of this latest assessment and I will be asking Network Rail for a meeting to help progress matters.”

Labour district and Wellington town councillor Andrew Govier said: “We’re pleased about this progress towards a new station. It would be a popular idea in the town and anything that can make it happen is good news.”
