THE 85th Wellington Flower Show took place at the Alan Rogers Centre at Wellington School on Saturday.
Once again it was an extremely happy event, well supported by visitors from Wellington and further afield. The entries were the second highest over recent years, which came as a pleasant surprise.
Cookery entries were the best for a long time and the fruit, vegetables, cut flowers and pot plants, which are at the heart of the show, remained high. This is in no small way due to the sterling efforts of growers such as Ron Symons, Mike Hawkins, Mike Broom and David Smith.
The judges were extremely pleased with the high quality of exhibits. The only disappointment was the children’s entries which were relatively low. Thanks go to our sponsors and advertisers without whom the show would not be possible.
Visitors were able to buy plants from Whitepost and Ford Nurseries, and Chelston Nurseries had a wonderful display in the hall.
We were also pleased that Somerset Wildlife Trust, Wellington WI and Wellington Museum Society were able to attend. Once again Wellington Camera Club had a room to show visitors the range of its activities over the year.
We were delighted to welcome the new headmaster of Wellington School, Eugene du Toit, to present the prizes. Our thanks go to him and the governors of the school for the use of the ARC, a wonderful venue for the flower show.
The next show is the 2020 Spring Show at Wellington Prep School on March 28.
