PEOPLE in a busy Wellington street have been told once again that measures to prevent it being used as a rat run cannot be implemented.

Residents in Holyoake Street have long asked for it to be either closed off at one end to make it a no-through road or to become a one-way street.

They have become increasingly fed up with the amount of traffic using the road with many people going down there while driving to and from work at the factories in Station Road.

A traffic engineer from Somerset County Council has met residents in the area in the past and told them that not a lot could be done as any action would just move the problem to another street.

Cllr Andrew Govier, who represents Wellington at County Hall, had recently met the traffic engineer again to discuss the problems being experienced in Holyoake Street. But the answer was the same – nothing can be done.

Members of Wellington Town Council were told earlier this month that the infrastructure was not in place to support a major change.

Town clerk Greg Dyke said: “The county council’s traffic engineer has met residents in the area before about this and the answer is still ‘no’ as it would simply push the problems onto another street.”
