THE Rev David Burton said farewell to the Upper Culm Valley Mission Community at a choral service of Holy Communion at St Mary’s Church, Hemyock.
The rector was retiring after six years within the community and a large congregation from five churches, along with villagers and local organisation’s representatives, attended the service.
Mark Fitzgerald, Warden Culm Davy Chapel, gave a reading, and Hazel Partridge (Hemyock), Kit Hoile (Culmstock) and Michael Hudson (Clayhidon) led prayers.
Following the service drinks were served at the Parish Hall followed by a buffet lunch enjoyed by about 100 people.
David Bawler, a churchwarden at St Mary’s, spoke on behalf of the UCVMC thanking David for all he had contributed to the churches and life in the area.
A vibrant painting of a view over Hemyock by local artist Liz Gregory was presented by Jenny Doble, warden at St Mary’s, to the Rector.
Stephen Bullett, warden at St Andrew, Clayhidon, gave a cheque with a bouquet and book token to the rector’s wife, Jill.
In his speech of thanks David said he was sad to be leaving as he had made a lot of friends but was looking forward to retirement.
Richard Preston, warden at All Saints, Culmstock proposed the toast.
The Rector and his wife will make their new home at Uffculme.
