SAMARITANS of Taunton and Somerset is appealing for donations to help ensure that its volunteers can continue to support people struggling to cope with the challenges of coronavirus.
Several Samaritans are self-isolating or live a distance away but, even with a reduced number, the branch in Taunton has been able to cover every shift, ensuring that it can provide emotional support to anyone who phones at this time of crisis.
Samaritans on duty are following strict guidelines on hygiene standards and social distancing.
The door of the branch, normally open to visitors between 9am and 9pm, is closed at present.
Branch director Bob Cornes said: “For over 50 years our branch has provided a listening ear to anyone who needs emotional support, which has been possible through so many people’s kind donations.
“Now more than ever, we need the public’s continued support.”
Secretary of State for Health Matt Hancock confirmed that Samaritans provide an essential service.
But planned fundraising events have been cancelled, meaning the branch is facing a significant loss of much-needed income.
“So we are calling on the people in the area to help us ensure that we continue to be here for anyone who needs us,” said Bob.
“Our amazing volunteers have kept the branch open in these very difficult circumstances because we know that our services are needed more than ever.
