WELLINGTON Operatic Society’s production of Sugar, the musical based on the hit film Some Like It Hot, hits the stage at the Wellesley this week.
Two out of work musicians, Joe and Jerry, witness the St Valentine’s massacre of gangsters in Chicago and, attempting to escape from the murderers, join an all-girl band and head off for an engagement in a hotel in Miami.
The plot gets hilariously complicated when Joe, now known as Josephine, falls in love with the beautiful band singer, Sugar Kane, who wants to marry a millionaire. Joe disguises himself as the man of her dreams, Junior Shell, in order to woo her. Meanwhile, wealthy Osgood Fielding Jnr is pursuing Daphne, unaware she is really Jerry in disguise.
Total chaos erupts when the gangsters descend on the hotel and realise who Josephine and Daphne really are. Leon Searle, who starred in the Society’s production of Singin’ In The Rain two years ago, plays Joe/Josephine/ Junior; Ian Oliver makes a welcome return to the Society in the role of Jerry/Daphne; and Hannah Green plays the title role of Sugar Kane.
These three fine actors have revelled in their parts, making the show a real comedy classic. With a strong chorus, vibrant choreography under the direction of Susan Stratton, colourful costumes and a catchy and foot-tapping score, the show is sure to entertain.
The production runs from tomorrow (Tuesday) to Saturday each evening at 7.30pm with a 2.30pm matinee on the Saturday. Tickets are available from Odette’s Tea Room, 27 High Street, Wellington, online at www.ticketsource.co.uk/
