YEAR 8 students from Court Fields School in Wellington enjoyed a weekend away under canvas for the school’s annual Blackdown Challenge event.
Two teams hiked about 30 miles over two days, camping overnight at Forest Glade Holiday Park near Blackborough.
Headteacher Rachael Bennett, who walked with the girls’ team, said: “The girls were cross that the boys’ team beat them to Forest Glade, so on the second day really pushed themselves to be first back to Court Fields School.
“We have some great map readers and pace setters which will stand them in good stead for the Duke of Edinburgh Award which we offer in Year 9.”
Students learnt how to put up tents and cook on trangia’s, some students having never camped or enjoyed the task of working out where poles go and securing groundsheets.
Organiser and leader Mr Brookes, who is set to finish his Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award shortly, said: “Students had a great time camping and learning to be self-sufficient away from home. It is a long way to walk, which challenged some students, but they did not give up and were determined to complete the challenge, showing great character.”
The Government is promoting character education in schools which Court Fields School delivers with a wide range of extra-curricular and enrichment opportunities for all students.
Ms Bennett added: “We work hard to ensure that every child participates in something extra at Court Fields and our ethos is committed to a holistic approach to education.”
