A NEW art gallery has opened in Cornhill, Wellington.

The gallery, called Red Hat, has been opened by Claire Rice, who will be the artist-in-residence.

Visitors are invited to watch Claire at work at the gallery, which is open from 10am-4.30pm each day.

An official opening has taken place performed by Pauline Homeshaw MBE.

Other artists who will be exhibiting at the gallery include fabric artist Trish Perrin, sculptor Melanie Dee- gan, painter Nancy Farmer, stoneware maker Wendy Dunt, ceramicist Renee Kilburn, painter Dave Arnold, painter Caroline McMillan, painter and felt artist Kate Burrows, driftwood sculptor Emma Duke, bespoke Teddies by Tricia Greenbeck, beads by Annie Collins, painter Helena Orlowski, glasswork

by Sue Heys, potter Drew Robbins, and painter Wendy Head.

Joining at the end of June will be Kate Newlyn, bronze sculpture artist. Claire said she would welcome interest from other local artists.

She said: "The gallery was previously in High Street Wiveliscombe, but closed when I went to take up a residency in a gallery on the Barbican in Plymouth. "The new Red Hat will have the same ethos as previously when we operated as a worker's cooperative and we will be offering high quality, locally produced arts, crafts and plants produced in the West Country by an impressive group of artisans, most already well known in the area."
