Each month Court Fields School, Wellington, focuses on the work of a different faculty area to find out what students are studying, showcase some of their work and celebrate their achievements.
This half-term, Year 7 students in Technology put their practical skills to work considering environmental issues and solutions. Having completed their health and safety introduction to the workshop, students created bug hotels to encourage and protect a greater range of wildlife in the local area.
As part of the project, students learned how to work with a range of materials and considered the suitability and sustainability of their choices.
Year 8 students have been building on this knowledge of resistant materials to create useful home appliances such as phone holders and mood lights, and are incorporating knowledge of electronics and circuitry into their projects to widen their knowledge and skills.
Students were excited to share their new learning, with one student saying: "I love being able to complete practical work and learn how to use all of the tools and materials. It is such a great feeling when you know that you have created a final product and can take it home to show your family."
Head of Technology Ian Keitch said: "Technology is about so much more than just banging nails into wood. It is important for all students to understand their relationship with technology and to promote individual competence in problem solving and design in a changing technological world.
"Having an increased awareness of a variety of materials, equipment and processes allows students to make informed choices regarding the environmental impact of their footprint on the environment, something our students are passionate about."
