We certainly can’t complain about lack of entertainment in the constituency recently. Last Saturday Taunton was alive with the sounds of Somerfest. There were knights mock sword fighting in the Castle moat, actors on Castle Green, multifarious music bands and even a beach beside the river. This event is now a firm fixture in the diary and is not only great fun but playing an important part in boosting the local economy as people throng into our county town to enjoy it.

The event is a vital fund raiser for the carnival which itself raises funds for a wide range of charities.
Whilst there has been a happy summer buzz in the constituency I write following a turbulent and sad week in Parliament after the tragic murder of one of our brightest, most talented and dedicated new colleagues, MP Jo Cox, who like me was passionate about representing her own home area in Parliament.
All parties were united in their tributes to Jo in the Chamber which highlighted that despite our differences we also have much in common across the green benches. On this note I have been deeply moved by the many messages of condolence, kindness and concern I have received from people of all political persuasions. These have restored my faith in humankind so thank you all.
Finally, do use your vote in the forthcoming, historic EU Referendum. I am voting IN, believing we will be safer, more prosperous, more humanitarian and environmentally stronger together. It’s not perfect but let’s change it from within, not turn our backs. And out is so final. I recognise though that there are sound points on either side and rest assured that whatever the result I shall remain your hard working MP, pushing to make Taunton Deane the best possible place it can be for us all.
