CASH boxes in car parking machines are being targeted by thieves who have stolen thousands of pounds as a result of raids in the area, Wellington Town Council was told at its September meeting.

PC Mickey Dunn said £300 had been stolen from the cash box at the Asda car park machine off Longforth Road overnight. It was thought that the same thief or thieves were responsible for forcing open cash boxes in five similar raids in Taunton and one in Minehead with thousands of pounds taken.

Some of the machines were only emptied once a week and it was suggested that they should be emptied more frequently, especially as some machines, especially at Minehead, took £1,000 a day.
