Town council round-up
Wellington Town Council has decided to recommend planning permission should be refused for the erection of seven homes on land at the back of the old Three Cups in Fore Street, Wellington, because of concerns over highway safety and poor access.
It was stated that vehicle access would be off Bulford but it was felt that drivers would be emerging ‘virtually blind’ because of its proximity to the Moose Hall.
Cllr Marcus Barr felt that a bollard should be erected in the Three Cups archway to stop vehicles from using it.
Cllr Gary James was concerned that the development would make parking in Mantle Street worse as no parking was being provided on the site.
He thought it would mean between seven and ten additional vehicles. Taunton Deane Borough Council will make the final decision.
AN extension of the double yellow lines in Priory to cover the full extent of the road on the St John’s School side would be ‘a very good idea’ said Cllr Gloria Copley at the October meeting of Wellington Town Council.
There had been problems in the area for a long time and councillors were told that complaints had been received from residents who could not get out of their driveways due to inconsiderate motorists blocking them.
There had also been occasions when large articulated lorries could not negotiate the bends because of vehicles being parked on the corners. It was reported that a site meeting was being held with Somerset County Council to consider what action should be taken about the problem.
THOSE pesky pigeons are still causing a mess in Cornhill, the thoroughfare that links Fore Street with North Street, and it has been going on for 16 years as the birds keep breeding and coming back.
Isabel Ward, who raised the issue at the town council meeting, felt it was time that Cornhill was power-washed again. It was some time since it had been carried out.
She said that Wetherspoon’s was fed up with the pigeons and the mess.
Town clerk Greg Dyke said he had been in regular touch with the owners, the MP, the environmental health officer and Taunton Deane and would do so again.
