WELLINGTON now has its very own carnival club. Unicorn Carnival Club – which has received positive feedback over the years with its ‘Poppy-themed’ floats – has moved to the town from Bridgwater.
Carnival chairman Dave Rylatt said: “We are delighted to welcome Unicorn CC to our town. This is a pivotal moment for us as they will be the first carnival club to represent the town of Wellington in over ten years.
“While we are, of course, extremely proud and appreciative of the local support afforded to our carnival, which includes our Scout troupes, Arts Association and local schools, and our superb majorette troupes, the presence of a carnival club in the town raises the profile of our carnival in other towns and can only help the continuance of carnival in our town.”
Carnival secretary Louise Brierley said: “We are always appreciative of our local support which enables us to take part in the renowned South West Carnival circuit which generates millions of pounds to the local economy, and supports local groups and charities.
“While our event is modest in comparison with the larger towns, we are still proud to be part of the carnival tradition which goes back many years.
“The addition of Unicorn CC to our family can only strengthen our prospects going forward.
“In addition to the welcome news of Unicorn becoming part of our family, we hope to make further announcements regarding entries to our carnival from Portugal and France, which firmly establishes our event as an international event.”
Unicorn CC was established in 2013 by the current chairman, Guy Ford, and has always had a military theme, raising awareness of military anniversaries and teaching young people about their own local history in a fun way.
Mr Ford worked closely with
the Royal British Legion for the
first two years, helping raise
money for the Poppy Appeal, then moved on to helping a local aviation museum as the chosen charity last year.
Mr Ford said: “We are happy with the warm welcome we have received in Wellington and look forward to establishing new members and hopefully some new local sponsors.
“Carnival clubs rely heavily upon the invaluable help of volunteers and sponsors so any help or support local people are able to give would be greatly received.”
Mr Ford added: “Unicorn CC is also looking to bring out our 30ft trailer this year but we are in the need of a towing vehicle.
“If anyone knows of one please get in touch with us via Facebook or mobile 07734 623504.”
Unicorn made its 2016 debut on Sunday at Watchet Carnival, coming home with third prize in the walking entry class.
