WELLINGTON has sent a clear message to planners who will decide if a massive development on the town's northern boundary can go ahead: "We don't want it."

The controversial plans have sparked strong public objections and could see Wellington Town Council, which can only comment on the proposal, and Taunton Deane planners in direct opposition once again.

Monday's debate took place on the same day diggers moved onto the Mantle Street site to start the new Wellington medical centre, which is going ahead despite strong opposition.

Wellington North Ward Cllr Andrew Govier told the WWN yesterday, Tuesday: "The town does not want a garden centre, or more housing, on the northern edge of the town."

His comments came after John Haymer, Taunton Deane Borough Council's planning officer, told town council members on Monday that while the site was outside the limits of Wellington, the principal of building a garden centre there was "acceptable."

Cllr Govier added: "There is a risk we could have another medical centre on our hands."
