A couple walking from Land’s End to John O’Groats to raise money for charity have heaped praise on the people of Wellington, saying they have helped to restore their faith in human nature.

June, 67, and Royston Mayou, 64, are raising funds for Scope, a charity they chose because Royston has cerebral palsy.

To keep costs down they are sleeping in their small, elderly camper van.

Each day they walk about ten miles from the van, then had planned to use public transport to get back to it. But since setting off three weeks ago, they have not had to use public transport once.

And a post on the Wellington Facebook page looking for recommendations for places to eat saw an outpouring of offers of help and support.

Bacon sandwiches, lifts back to their van, free nights in a bed and breakfast, places to park for the night with a bathroom - the people of Wellington were eager to help.

“It’s been an amazing response - we’ve been blown away by how nice the people here are,” said June. “I’m beginning to think we might be able to get all the way to John O’Groats without using public transport at all.”

The retired couple, who live in South Wales, expect to take about three months to get to the north of Scotland.

But Wellington will always have a special place in their hearts. “Can we live here?” asked June.
