THE consumption of alcohol and ‘legal highs’ could soon be banned from all public places in Wellington.
At the moment there is a ‘no drinking’ policy in certain aras of the town.
In a statement Taunton Deane Borough Council (TDBC) says: “Consultations are about to be launched on a scheme to make the centre of Wellington a safer place for people to enjoy.
“The Deane Council, supported by Wellington Town Council, is considering introducing a Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) that would effectively outlaw the use of ‘intoxicating substances’ – alcohol and psychoactive substances known as ‘legal highs before they were outlawed – in public.
“This would replace the existing ‘no drinking’ order that applies to certain areas of Wellington – and cover the town as a whole.”
Jane Warmington, executive councillor for Community Leadership, said: “I welcome this opportunity to consult the public on what is right for Wellington.
“The town council and the police have given us a steer on what they feel is right for the community and now we are keen to hear from residents, businesses and visitors alike.
“These orders play an important part in our combined efforts to keep Wellington a safe, vibrant and welcoming place.”
The move has been made possible thanks to changes in legislation that allows local councils to place an order where persistent activities are having a detrimental effect on the quality of life for people in the community.
TDBC introduced a similar order covering Taunton town centre last year when consultations resulted in a large majority of people in favour of the initiative.
The restrictions on alcohol would not apply to pavement cafes or to licensed premises.
Anyone in breach of the order would be committing a criminal offence and could receive a Fixed Penalty Notice or face a fine in court. Police and council enforcement officers would have the power to demand the surrender of the intoxicating substances.
The consultations are open and run until January 27, 2017. People can respond by emailing safe
