New life has been breathed into a woodland on the edge of Bradford-on-Tone with the planting of 200 trees.
The woodland at Heatherton Park was planted with 800 trees last year to commemorate those who lost their lives in the First World War.
Unfortunately more than a quarter of them – including oak, birch and horse chestnut – died because of the long, hot summer.
So a group of local people got together to replace the dead trees, jointly paid for by land owner Tim Everett and the Woodland Trust, who provided the original trees. Local artist John Abraham, who came up with the idea for the commemorative woodland, said: “It was obviously sad to lose so many of the trees but we are enormously grateful to Tim and the Woodland Trust for helping us bring the woodland back to where it should be.
“It is important we remember those who fought and lost their lives in the First World
War and we want this woodland to be a place where people can just come, and enjoy the open space.”
