THE National Trust wants visitors to pay for parking when they take a look at Wellington Monument.
An application has been submitted by the Trust to install a pay-and-display machine and signage at the monument.
The Trust is currently fundraising for millions of pounds to help restore the iconic structure.
A spokesman for the Trust said: “We’re introducing the pay and display machines to help us care for Wellington Monument for years to come.
“We previously charged £1 for car parking through an honesty box.
“The car park income will help us pay for on-going repair and to help keep the site presentable for all. We’ve cared for Wellington Monument since 1931. It was given to the Trust without any funds to care for it.
“It costs £1,000 a year to empty our dog poo bins and our rangers spend around 200 hours a year litter picking and checking the site. All support is much appreciated.”
A decision is expected to be made towards the end of next month.
