WELLINGTON Town Council is holding a Beating of the Bounds event on Sunday.

It will take a route following the civil boundaries of the parish, on footpaths and roads around the town.

The seven-mile walk, which will take about five hours, will set off from Westpark 26 at Chelston at 10am, seen off by the Mayor, Cllr Bob Bowrah, and pass points of interest such at the Canal, Railway, Tone Works and Westford Stream.

Participants are asked to park on the Chelston industrial estate.

For those who would like a shorter walk, on the northern edge of Tonedale follow a signed footpath at the side of R W Gale’s office, past the sewage farm and into open country and light woodland. It is more or less a straight path, following the old canal bed and ending at Nynehead Road.

The event last took place in 2012. Mr and Mrs Brunsch will again provide refreshments mid-way round. It is hoped as many people as possible will join the walk.

Beating the Bounds is the ancient tradition of verifying a parish boundary in days when maps were rare. Led by the local priest, young lads were beaten with twigs at strategic points to ensure they remembered boundary markers.
