THE National Trust is inviting people in the Wellington area to show their support for Wellington Monument by wearing their wellies to work or school next month.
Money coined in from the fundraiser on Wednesday, November 7, will go to the monument appeal.
Wellington boots, an invention often credited to the Duke of Wellington, can be worn either as they are, or brightened up with decoration, for a suggested donation of £1.
The Wellington Monument appeal will fund work to restore the monument, with work beginning at the top on the most damaged parts as well as correcting the bulging north face, and continue to work down while fundraising continues. If enough money is raised, the repairs will reach ground level and the monument will be opened to visitors once more.
Local fundraising is being led by community engagement officer Emma Jones. She is looking to hear people’s stories and meet as many people as possible from the Wellington community and surrounding area.
Emma said: “I’m really enjoying getting to know the local community and hearing such enthusiasm for the project – and am always looking for new stories and anecdotes about the monument. I’ll be in the town centre wearing my own colourful wellies on November 7, so if anyone would like to come and say ‘hi’ and find out more about the project, I’d love to see them.”
Donations can be collected by Emma or made online at nationaltrust.org.uk/wellingtonmonumentappeal
