WELLINGTON Folk & Custom Society joined the town’s Spring Fayre for the first time, with a musical procession for the May weekend.
On Sunday, May 4, the Wellington Folk & Custom Society gathered at the Cottage Inn pub where they started their procession to Wellington Park led by Lord of the Wild, banner bearers, the May Queen, The Green Man, a Fool, Hobby Horse, Saint Brigit, Saint Blaize, alongside members and supporters in May garlands and Folk Costumes. Bootstrap Border Morris musicians and Morris dancers also joined the troop.

On their journey the group cheered, saying “Happy Maying” and “Happy May Weekend”, ringing bells and playing folk tunes en route through the town.
At 12.30pm, the main Spring Fayre procession began, organised by Friends of Wellington Park. The Wellington Majorettes lead the procession, followed by the Wellington mayor Cllr Janet Lloyd, then Wellington and Taunton MP Gideon Amos, with the Folk & Custom Society in tow until they reached the band stand.
Bootstrap Border Morris performed with a special guest, The Green Man. The society also hosted a stall for the day, with information, a tribute display of the late Richard Fox (Only Freeman of Wellington), as well as member demonstrations and workshops.

A spokesperson for the Wellington Folk & Custom Society said: “It was a great event that Friends of Wellington Park put on, we loved being part of it.
“We had a lot of positive feedback from the public, organisers, other groups, stall holders. We thoroughly enjoyed the day.
“When the Spring Fayre closed down, we went back to the Cottage Inn, where we started the day, reflected on the day and had much May Merriment. Happy May everyone! and let the Sunshine continue!”
