Wellington is hoping to bag a gold award in the South West in Bloom awards after judges visited the town in July.

The competition sees towns and villages across the region judged on their greenery.

In 2022 Wellington bagged a 'silver gilt' award, a step above bronze but just short of a silver rating.

But this year with the addition of the new community garden at The Basins, residents are hoping to be awarded gold.

Janet Lloyd, Chair of the Allotments Advisory Group said: "We were given feedback last year when we won the silver gilt. We have acted on that feedback and are now hoping for a silver, if not a gold award.

"We have our new community garden in The Basins where residents can grow their own vegetables which we didn't have before, that should get us some marks."

When judges visited the town in July green fingered residents got to work to put on a show. A number of town centre businesses adorned their shopfronts with hanging baskets and last minute works were hurriedly carried out at the park after vandals trashed its flower beds.

Judges will return their verdict in September, when the town is hoping its hard work will have paid off.
