WELLINGTON Museum in The Squirrel, opposite Lloyds Bank in Fore Street, has opened for its 36th season.

The opening was carried out by Wellington’s town clerk, Kathryn Hemensley, at a brief, informal ceremony also attended by Wellington Mayor Gary James, his consort Bee James and some of the museum’s 24 volunteer stewards and committee members.

Kathryn told of a conversation she had overheard recently in which a resident said the museum was well worth a visit – and this was an opinion with which she agreed wholeheartedly.

The museum has displays of artefacts and pictures of Wellington’s industrial and social heritage, as well as pictures of its townscape over the years.

A new display this year consists of photographs of Wellington’s numerous places of worship, past and present. The museum is devoted almost entirely to the history of the town but one of its more popular exhibits is a working 30-year old typewriter on which visitors can try out old skills.

The museum is open 10am-4pm Monday to Friday and 10am-1pm on Saturday until the end of September, and entry is free. The opening hours then change slightly.
