The Christmas lights will be switched on in Wellington on Saturday during a sparkling evening of entertainment.

Wellington Majorettes will lead Santa on his sleigh before he goes to his grotto at the Wellington Weekly News offices in High Street.

Wellington Pantomime Group will present songs from its forthcoming show, The Wizard of Oz and St John’s School, accompanied by Beech Grove school choir, will perform a nativity play.

The Quaker Meeting House garden will be illuminated with candles in a Celebration of Light.

Mayor Janet Lloyd will switch on the lights with Wellington Prep School’s head boy and girl at about 6pm, and traders will keep shops open late at the free family event, which runs from 4pm to 7pm.

Langford Lakes has given a tree, which will be put up in the town centre outside the old post office.
