Wellington is set to see snowfall in March as Spring gets off to an unusually chilly start.

The BBC weather forecast expects the first week of March to feature sunny spells and cloud, before rainfall starts toward the weekend.

Snowfall is predicted on Thursday March 9 as temperatures plummet to 3°C. Light snow is set to dust the town from 8pm, with temperatures feeling freezing because of wind chill. The snowfall is expected to fall until 10pm when it will give way to cloudy skies, before resuming at 11pm for another hour.

The remainder of the week will be characterised by rain and sleet with sunny spells, with temperatures reaching a high of 10°C on Monday March 13.

The Points West weather outlook for the remainder of the week is of dry and settled conditions with bright spells and variable cloud. Saturday is set to be bright before the clouds arrive, staying dry.

Prior to 2018, the last time the UK saw snowfall in March was in 2013, when snow continued to fall across some parts of the UK until as late as early April.

Easter in 2013 was the coldest ever recorded, and the month of March as a whole was the fourth coldest in over 100 years.
