People engaged in 'destructive' behaviour at the Basins have been warned of consequences from the police.

Wellington Town Council has urged people who witness littering, camping, or fire starting at the beauty spot to inform the police.

In a statement the council said: "As the weather is getting warmer we would like to remind you that overnight camping and bonfires at The Basins are NOT permitted.

"If you see anyone camping overnight, setting fires, or littering please report this to the police.

The council also warned that careless fishing practices could lead to wildlife being caught and killed as a result.

"If you are fishing at The Basins, do not leave your lines unattended. Ducks and swans can get caught in these lines and could be seriously injured or killed.

"This is an area for wildlife and we hope that everyone enjoying the area can do so in a non-destructive and compassionate way."

The council added: "Consequences will be handed down by the police if an offence is reported and substantiated"
