WELLINGTON Town Council has been told that traffic engineers have been ‘monitoring use and modelling a resequencing of the traffic light’ in town.

It follows concern over the traffic problems in Wellington shown by town retailers who approached the local business association.

A report stated: “The traffic lights problem is something that has been a concern to this council for some time now.

“The situation is exacerbated by the fact that since the building of a new supermarket in Red Lion Court the traffic lights at the Longforth Road/High Street junction are synchronised to operate four ways.

“This, as everybody can see, leads to a build up in the centre of town, especially when the other lights in North Street and South Street allow traffic into High Street.

“The problem is obviously worse at certain times of the day when employees of Relyon and Swallowfield are heading into town after finishing work.

“This might ease a little in the foreseeable future with the continued construction

of the Longforth Farm development spine road.

“The council  supported a suggestion made by Cllr Andrew Govier that the situation be monitored on the ground so that the traffic engineers could see for themselves the problems being experienced.”

It also made a contribution of £2,000 towards the costs involved.
