A woman found lying by the roadside in Wellington wearing only a tracksuit and no shoes was taken to hospital.

A motorist noticed the woman, believed to be middle aged, on a grass verge at the side of Hoyles Close, off Hoyles Road, near the Wellington relief road.

Police confirmed they attended to support the ambulance service and said they were treating it as a "concern for welfare" incident.

The emergency services were called to the scene on Thursday morning and police and two ambulances were sent.

One witness said the person appeared to have been bleeding from an injury to her side.

Another witness said the emergency services arrived quickly after calls were made following the discovery of the woman.

The witness said: “The woman, who was spotted by a car driver who reversed back to the scene, appeared to be in a dishevelled state and was lying behind a bush.”

They said she was wearing tracksuit bottoms and top, but had nothing on her feet. She was conscious but appeared confused, and the witness said she may have been lying there injured for several hours.

The woman had blood on her side, but the cause of the apparent injury was not clear.

South Western Ambulance Service sent two ambulances and an officer and the woman was taken to Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton.

A police spokesperson said: “We supported the ambulance service with a concern for welfare incident in the Hoyles Road area of Wellington this morning following a call at 7.55am.

"The individual was taken into the care of paramedics and transported to hospital.”
