NEWS broken this week by the Wellington Weekly of yet another major housing development being proposed for Wellington by yet another major national housebuilder will have dismayed many residents.

Persimmon, who will be familiar to residents living in their houses on the Cades estate, have not yet said how many new homes they want to build.

But what they have said has immediately raised deep concern.

They want to build along Popes Lane, Rockwell Green, the green wedge dividing Wellington from Rockwell Green and which, sensibly, used to be protected under planning policies, but which, not so sensibly, had its protection removed by the former Somerset West and Taunton Council (SWT).

Now, the effects of that SWT decision appear to be coming home to roost for Wellington and Rockwell Green residents who already struggle to get appointments with their GP, are forced on occasion to queue in the rain to use a Post Office, do not have a dentist, sit in their cars in long traffic jams, and cannot get their children into an already-full Court Fields School (thanks to the excellent job headteacher Polly Matthews has done in turning it around from failing to first choice for many parents).
