THE TEAM captain of Wellington Bowling Club's B team wrote on the team-sheet that his players should wear “Fancy Dress” at their next match, writes Martin Speakman.
Most of the B team ignored the instruction as being the team captain's sense of humour. However one bowler took it seriously with Peter White turning up in full fancy dress as a French onion seller.
Everyone was a bit surprised but suitably impressed because Peter certainly looked the part. He put up with a bit of ribbing from his teammates but carried on to play his game of bowls in full fancy dress.
It did him no harm, however, because the B team he was playing for won comfortably against Wellington's C team.
Unfortunately, Wellington's A team, who were away against table topping Burnham-on-Sea A, did not come home with a win despite their best efforts.
Bill Warnett, Henry Richbell and Christine Willcocks' B team led from the start on their home green against Liz May, Tony Stone and Ken Brown's C team. Ken's threesome were only three behind after 10 ends but the Bs collected another 11 shots in the end game to win comfortably 21 – 12.
Mark Bond, Peter White and David Beaudet's Bs set off at great pace against Wendy Scott, Kevin Austin and Allan Samuel' Cs, leading 11 – 0 after a short time and winning by a big margin 32 – 7.
June Anderson, Alan May and Ian Hollingsworth's Bs were also on top form against Ian Lloyd, Angie Moore and Andrew Baird, winning a competitive contest 22 – 10.
The B team won on all three rinks with an overall score of 75 to the C team's 29.
The A team, who were away against table topping Burnham-on-Sea A team, lost on all three rinks despite their very best efforts - by 77 shots to 40.
