The Wellington Bowling Club Outdoor Competition Finals were a great success despite the difficulties presented by intermittent rain showers.

Everyone enjoyed ten finals over the course of the weekend which saw excellent bowling and some very exciting games. Unfortunately, the Men's Handicap Pairs had to be postponed because of the weather. The competitions were organised by Janet Moore, the club outdoor competitions secretary.

In the Amy Stanton Mixed Pairs final , Mike and Gill Groves came up against Cliff Trott and Pauline Wadham.

Mike and Gill set off at a good pace and by the halfway point led 10 – 5. It was all looking good for them but Cliff and Pauline fought back and played very well indeed to overtake and move on to win in style 19 – 10.

In the Australian Pairs, Paul Kelsall and Peter White started well against Ian Hollingsworth and David Beaudet. They led 3 – 1 after two ends but their opponents soon got down to serious bowling and powered ahead to win 27 – 7.

In the Ladies' Two Wood competition, June Anderson was in the final against Monica Carter. Monica led 8 – 6 after ten ends but June began to move ahead and after a long battle she won by two shots 16 – 14.

In the final of the New Bowlers Singles, Paul Kelsall played Peter White. Peter set off at a rapid pace and although Paul did his best to catch up, Peter was the winner by 21 shots to 10. There was some very good bowling by two bowlers who have only recently taken up the game.

In the Men's Championship, two very good bowlers came up against one another. Pete Nichols and Julian Street. The scores were level on 10 shots each after 12 ends but Julian pulled ahead in the end game to win it, 21 – 13.

In the Men's Handicap Singles, Pete Nichols was the finalist against Julian Street. Pete managed to win several ends during the game but Julian was the in form player on the day. He played accurately and consistently to win a good match 21 – 8

Everyone was looking forward to the Open Championship Singles final between two very capable bowlers. Mike Connor, who will celebrate his 88th birthday in November, and the experienced Ian Hollingsworth who won a club Indoor Open Singles competition earlier this year..

Although Mike played well, it was Ian who was the man in form on the day and he went on to win a good match 21 – 7.

In the Men's 2 Wood final Jay Merrell had a very close match against Peter White, a very strong club bowler. At the halfway point the two were level on 7 shots each and although there was little between them Jay came home the winner 15 – 12.

Debbie Lane and Marguerite Nicholls had a battle royal in the Ladies' Championship Final. It was nip and tuck all the way. By the 13th end they were level and despite Debbie playing an excellent game it was Marguerite who came through to win it 22 – 18.

In the Ladies handicap final Pauline Wadham and June Anderson put up a terrific fight which could have gone either way. After 17 ends Pauline was leading by two shots, 17 – 15 but in the last ends June overtook to take a close victory 21 – 17.
