THE local cricket season should have reached the halfway stage this summer but not a ball has been bowled.

Wellington CC administrator David Derrick said: “It’s been tough without being able to engage with the game as we normally would, especially given the generally fine weather that has been the case so far this spring and early summer.

“We are now getting to a stage when, sadly, playing time is going to recede as we are now entering the second half of the season, on paper at least, but I know the likes of the West of England Premier League – where our 1st XI play – and the Somerset League – where our 2nd and 3rd XIs play – are looking at what formats and potential exists for play given the limitations still in place.

“Credence also needs to be given to accessibility and the condition some grounds are in when any competition makes a plan to play and I am sure all due diligence will be undertaken when such plans are drawn up.

“WEPL are due a board meeting by Tuesday, July 7, and we are holding an outdoor socially distanced management committee meeting that evening at Wellington Playing Field from 7.30pm. So we hope to be able to hear from them by then so that we can react accordingly, but all club members can be sure the club have been and continue to work hard towards our strategic aims and are confident they will be able to move forward in the not too distant future.

“We are also looking forward to offering a new clubhouse proposition once ongoing preparatory work has been completed in the not too distant future with the addition of new product lines and new behind the scenes technology.”
