WELLINGTON Cricket Club have confirmed that Sri Lankan all-rounder Lakshan Edirisinghe will again be their overseas’ player for this coming season.

Ediri enjoyed an outstanding season with Wellington in the Somerset Division of the West of England Premier Cricket League last summer - with both bat and ball. He hit 793 runs in the league and took 20 wickets. He also proved more than a useful fielder.

He helped Wellington finish sixth in their division while Wellington also reached the final of the 20-overs a side Baker Cup competition where they put up a spirited fight before losing to Taunton Deane at the Cooper Associates County Ground, Taunton. They knocked out the favourites Bridgwater in the semi-finals.

Meanwhile, Arron Campbell has stepped down as skipper of Wellington’s first team after captaining the side for eight seasons. Under his leadership, the team also played in Premier Two of the West of England Premier League - their highest level of cricket in the history of the club.

Campbell proved to be one of the most successful captains over the past 30 years and during his spell in charge very much encouraged youth and brought young players to the club.

It was announced at the club’s annual meeting at the end of October that batter Jacob Hurry would be taking over as captain, with Toby Shirzaker becoming vice-captain.

Veteran all-rounder Rob Moysey remains as captain of Wellington 2nd XI who gained promotion to the first division of the Somerset League last season - their third successive promotion. Alex Derbridge will be vice-captain.

The 3rd XI also has a change of leadership with Tyler Fyfe taking over as captain from Connor Wickenham, while Tony Hutchings becomes Tyler’s deputy in place of Des Campbell who continues as the club’s hard-working groundsman.

Simon Spalding has also stepped down as president of the club after five seasons in the role.
