Somerset made it a double when they beat their local rivals Gloucestershire by 16 runs in the final Vitality Blast T20 group match on Friday evening at Taunton.

Before the start of the match both teams lined up in front of the Andy Caddick Pavilion for a minutes silence in memory of the Minehead Middle School pupil who tragically died in a road accident the previous day.

After choosing to bat Somerset got off to a good start , Tom Lammonby hitting the first six of the game in the third over when he hoisted David Payne over backward square leg. However with the total on 23 Lammonby was out for 15.

Smeed hit his first big six off the first ball of Josh Shaw over and another over long off from the third delivery but he departed on 29 off 18 balls with two 4s and 6s.

The Gloucester slow bowlers then took the pace off the ball and made runs hard to come by until big hitting Ben Green who blasted his way to 36 off 22 balls with four 4s and three 6s, was joined by Craig Overton and the pair aded 42 in an unbroken stand from 21 balls to see the hosts to 164 for seven, chasing what looked to be a below par target Overton opened with a maiden over.

The next over however bowled by Lewis Gregory conceded 14 runs, including two 6s.The introduction of Jake Ball met with Immediate success when he bowled Miles Hammond making the visitors 25 for one.

Lewis Gregory pouched a good catch at cover off Overton next over to see Gloucester 36 for two.Jack Leach came into the attack for the 10th over and third ball had Ben Charlesworth well caught by Ball.

Next delivery smart fielding by Ball ran out Jack Taylor which made the visitors 66 for four. The 100 came up in the 14th over, before Green returned at the Marcus Trescothick Pavilion End and immediately struck having Oli Price caught and bowled for 18.

The run rate was mounting and with 30 balls left 61 were needed. 48 were still required with three overs left and eventually the visitors ended on 148 for eight. Ball took two for 20 while Gregory had two for 35.

The Cidermen have now qualified for the quarter finals and will host Warwickshire Bears at Taunton on Saturday September 6 starting at 6.30pm.
