BAGBOROUGH SUNDAY XI 203-9

WELLINGTON SUNDAY XI 138-9

UNLIKE the club’s Saturday sides, Wellington Sunday XI managed to see some action last weekend when they played a 30-overs per side game at home to their Bagborough counterparts who were 65-run victors, writes David Derrick.

The match, which should have been a Taunton and District Sunday League Division A game in its original form, was turned into a friendly once recreational cricket was able to be commenced and saw the West Somerset League side choose to bat on winning the toss. They batted for a fair while under grey skies and steady drizzle and this saw Wellington break through with Macaulay Campbell and Will Derrick taking four top order wickets between them with figures of 1-25 and 3-19 in six overs apiece.

At 91-7 with success for both Tom Shannon and Tyler Fyfe Wellington were in a good position despite Bagborough opener Gass making a patient 50.

This saw D.Raffill and T.Stirzaker with 65 and 25 respectively add 95 for their side’s eighth wicket as they hit high, long and hard.

Connor Wickenden and Ollie Hunt saw the back of them in the end as Arron Campbell with two catches, Oli Beale with one and Jacob Hurry with a stumping saw that Bagborough had got to 203-9 at ‘tea’.

Oli Beale was quickly into his stride with 21 out of a team score of 25, but when he was out the Red and Blacks were in need of some consolidation and it came from Arron Campbell who hit three sixes in his cool 32 as he and Will Derrick with 11 got their side’s score into the 70s. But there was another collapse and at 77-8 in 17 overs Wellington were on the slide, but a positive ninth wicket stand of 53 between Yours Truly with 15 and Tom Shannon with 32no brightened matters as both played positively and with energy.

Shannon doubled his best score for Wellington in this knock and he can be pleased with his efforts as he and Connor Wickenden saw time out and the game to a close.

Next up for the side is a visit to new opposition in Morebath CC, who are another West Somerset League side on Sunday 23rd August with a start time to be confirmed.
