WELLINGTON’S goal-scoring midfielder Sam Towler has turned down the chance of joining Toolstation League premier division rivals Bridgwater Town.
Bridgwater had put in seven days notice of approach to Wellington to talk to the player but Towler told manager Clive Jones on Sunday he would be staying.
“I told Sam that I wanted him to stay and that he should see out the season with us. Sam is a good player and I think he could go on and play at a higher level..
“I’ve never stood in the way of any player who wants to better himself. I’m chuffed Sam is staying because Bridgwater have money and it would have been tempting.”
Meanwhile Wellington, whose game at Brislington at the weekend was postponed because of a waterlogged pitch, will be hoping to get back into action on Saturday when they are due to play Chipping Sodbury at home in the Premier Division of the Toolstation League (3.00).
“I liked the way they played when they won promotion two years ago,” said Jones. “It should be a good game.
“We have 17 games left and we have a target to aim at.”
With brothers Sam and Conor Bryant now playing again, Jones says he now has a squad of 18 players to choose from.
“I’m thinking of starting the season all over again,” he said. “It might mean upsetting one or two players. They will have to play in the reserves. It’s a problem - but a good one.”
Chipping Sodbury, who lost 3-1 at Cribbs on Saturday, are lying midtable, having won nine and drawn three of their 23 league matches.
Wellington are down in 16th spot but would appear to be clear of being dragged into a relegation dogfight.
