WELLINGTON Wanderers Under 11s made the short trip to Monkton Wood to face Ruishton in what proved to be a stern mid‑season test, played on an astro surface under cold, wet and blustery conditions.
From the first whistle it was clear that the weather would play a major role, and unfortunately Wellington never truly settled into their usual rhythm. The crisp, confident passing football that normally defines this group struggled to take shape, with the weather and fast surface disrupting their control and decision‑making.
As a result, the defensive unit found themselves called into action far more often than expected. To their immense credit, the back line stood up bravely to repeated pressure, showing determination, resilience and a willingness to put their bodies on the line. Rosco P produced a string of important interventions, keeping Wellington in the contest with sharp reactions and confident handling despite the difficult conditions.
While the performance was nowhere near the level the team expects of itself, what shone through was the players’ character. Heads rarely dropped, effort never faded, and the group continued to compete right to the final whistle. These are the moments that shape young footballers—challenging days that offer lessons in adaptability, focus and mental toughness. The team will take plenty from this experience, and there’s no doubt they’ll respond with the quality and spirit they’ve shown so often before.
A huge thank-you goes to the parents and supporters who stood through the wind and rain to cheer the boys on. Your commitment never goes unnoticed. Appreciation also to Roadchef, the team’s main sponsor, and R&M Motor, the match ball sponsor, for their continued support of the Wanderers’ journey.
The team will regroup, learn, and come back stronger. Days like this build the foundation for future success. JOHN NORMAN
