WELLINGTON lst XV put up their best performance of the season before eventually losing 17-13 at home to fourth-placed Okehampton in Regional Two South West in their last match of the campaign.
Having been hammered out of sight in many games, Wellington were more than competitive as they traded blows with their high-flying opponents.
Two tries by skipper George Hodgson and a penalty by Mikey Taylor kept them within striking distance of the opposition - but they could not quite get over the line.
However, as one Wellington official said afterwards: “This display bodes well for next season.”
Meanwhile, new champions Weston super Mare ended the season with a 100 per cent record after beating fifth-placed Crediton 29-19 at home.
It enabled them to finish 17 points clear of second-placed Tiverton, who were themselves 19 points ahead of Wadebridge Camels who finished in third spot.
