WELLINGTON held their nerve to win a penalty shootout 5-4 to edge past Middlezoy Rovers and progress in the Somerset Premier Cup after a thrilling 3-3 draw at the Carly Press Ground.

Wellington keeper Jack McAndrews was the hero in the end, saving two spot-kicks — including the decisive fifth — to send his side through.

The home line-up saw U18s captain Harry Chetland handed his full debut and Ryan Brereton making his first start since suffering a broken leg.

Wellington began brightly, but it was Middlezoy who struck first after ten minutes when a cross from the left was smartly finished by Liam Gilbert.

The hosts levelled on the half-hour as Josh Lukins’ teasing chip into the box deceived the goalkeeper and drifted into the net. Wellington then pressed for a second — Josh Baker and Oscar Albano both going close before Brereton was denied just before half-time.

With the score 1–1 at the break, Chetland and Brereton were replaced by Jack Alcock and James De Selincourt.

But Wellington were caught cold early in the second half as sloppy defending allowed Gilbert to race clear and slot home his second.

Wellington responded just six minutes later, Lukins again proved instrumental, crossing for Baker to nod down to skipper Glen Wright, who drilled in from close range.

The home side looked to have taken control on 72 minutes when Miles Quick’s delivery into the box was flicked on and dropped perfectly for Baker to crash home and put Wellington ahead for the first time.

But the lead lasted barely two minutes — Theo Worth’s low drive, helped by a slight deflection, brought Middlezoy back level at 3–3.

Both sides pushed for a winner in an exciting finale. Albano was denied by a superb point-blank save, while Middlezoy had penalty appeals waved away before McAndrews produced a fine stop in added time .
